Posted by Lisa LaGrou September 10, 2013 Reviews, Travel

Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark in Boyne Falls, MI is Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark. Video, pics and review of Av Bay, Mountain Grand Lodge and spa.

My family took a trip to Avalanche Bay in Boyne Falls, Michigan. Most people think that Boyne is a place just for skiing, but Boyne Mountain is open year-round with plenty of family fun activities.

The most well known family fun spot is the Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark. Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark is the biggest indoor water park in Michigan and it’s located within the Mountain Grand Lodge resort. Avalanche Bay Waterpark measures 88,000 square feet and features slides, kids pools, climbing walls, lazy river, and even a surf simulator.

Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark Features

  • 88,000 square feet
  • 800 gallon “Avalanche” dumping water tank
  • 4 slides (2 slides and 2 tubing slides – 1 Vertigo slide and 1 Super G slide)
  • 4 racing lane mat water slides
  • 6 pool side basket ball nets
  • 1 lazy river
  • 1 surf simulator
  • 1 climbing wall with three levels
  • 2 hot tubs
  • 1 kids area
  • 100+ interactive water fun geysers

Overall, the Av Bay Indoor Waterpark is a sure hit. The waterslides are all fast, entertaining, thrilling and loved by people of all ages. Av Bay is the largest waterpark in Michigan and it truly offers an action-packed experience. Av Bay has set the bar high for its competition. I’ve been to other indoor waterparks Up North where the fun wears off quickly for kids over 12. Avalanche Bay is a blast for kids, pre-teens and teens. I also saw plenty of adults hitting the waterslides and surf simulator. Click the official Avalanche Bay website for more details.

Lodging at Av Bay
There are many places to stay if you’re planning a trip to Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark. We stayed at the Mountain Grand Lodge (highly recommended), which is connected to the waterpark.

Other lodging options and they’re proximity to the Avalanche Bay waterpark include:

  • Mountain Grand Lodge – Connected to waterpark, indoor walk
  • Edelweiss Lodge – Short outdoor walk
  • Clock Tower Lodge – Short outdoor walk
  • Mountain Villas – Short outdoor walk
  • Village at Disciples Ridge – Short outdoor walk to short drive
  • Creekside – Short drive
  • Mountain Cabins – Short drive
  • Deer Lake Villas – Short drive
  • Boynehof – Short outdoor walk

The Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa is Boyne Mountain’s premier hotel. The Mountain Grand provides first-class accommodations featuring such amenities as fireplaces, kitchenettes, and flat screen televisions. Each room features the “Boyne Bed” which is made with high thread count sheets, lots of plush, and plenty of comfort. We definitely slept well – The Boyne Bed was unexpected luxury on a family vacation!

The Mountain Grand Lodge also offers salon and spa services, whirlpools, indoor/outdoor pools – including an outdoor pool that stays open and heated year-round. We enjoyed an outdoor swim as the temps dropped to 32 degrees outside at night.

There are many different rooms to choose from so there’s something for everyone and every occasion.

Rooms at the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa
There are 14 different style rooms with all sorts of features. Some include a full kitchen, which was one of the amenities we had in the Salzburg Suite. Our suite was laid out with a main floor and an upstairs. The main floor housed the kitchenette, living area, fireplace, balcony and one bathroom. The upper level housed the bedrooms and another bathroom. There was a master suite with a king-sized bed, a second bedroom with a queen-sized bed, and a third kids room with two bunk beds that slept four in a cozy, cute fort-style room. Each room has its own TV. This suite really feels like a home away from home. The kitchenette convenience was great as well. We were able to whip up food quickly in our suite and head out the door for fun.

Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa and Avalanche Bay Staff
The staff at Boyne Mountain is kind, courteous, friendly and very helpful. We never once ran into someone who wasn’t 100% eager to help. And, it was all genuine. I loved being surrounded by nice, friendly, kind people.

Dining at Boyne
Boyne Mountain has several dining options within it so you don’t have to drive to get to a restaurant. There are places all within walking distance. We mostly cooked, but we did venture out to Everett’s Restaurant once for dinner. Everett’s is located inside Mountain Grand Lodge. Other restaurants, stores and specialty shops are dotted around Boyne and offer even more opportunities for fun and things to do.

Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark Pricing
Pricing for the Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark varies with special offers, multi-day tickets, and lodging packages. But the basic rates are the evening rate (for 4p-close) of $22/person, and the full day rate of $25/person.

Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark Hours
Hours for the park vary by season. During the summer, Avalanche Bay is open all day every day. Near the ski season, it is open daily with limited hours. And during the off season, you can visit Avalanche Bay on the weekends. See the website for more detailed hours information.

Avalanche Bay Arcade
The arcade is located within the waterpark and operates during the same hours. You’ll get some free tokens with waterpark entry, but you don’t have to use the waterpark to use the arcade. The arcade is a two story deal with arcade games on the main level and the upper level dedicated to Hot Rod Racer tracks and derby competitions. You can build, race and take home your own Remote-controlled car, and you can build, decorate, race and take home your own Pinewood Derby car.

Ziplining at Boyne Mountain
Ziplining is a fun option at Boyne Mountain. It’s 780 feet long for the Twin Zip Rides, which are $20 per person and you get two flights. Or, you can do the 2.5 hour zip line adventure for $59 per person, which includes 10 different zip line trips from the top of the mountain. The ziplines at Boyne Mountain are open year-round and reach up to speeds of 25 mph.

Free activities at Mountain Grand Lodge/Boyne Mountain

– outdoor yard games
– swimming
– s’mores and nighttime bonfire
– chair lift rides
– movie times
– story times
– fitness room (for ages 16 and over)
– hayride

The pleasant surprises of our trip were all the fun activities that take place around Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa. The indoor/outdoor swimming is tremendous and the workout room trumps most fitness rooms you find at most hotels and resorts. The free activities at Boyne are perfect for when your kids (finally) tire of hours and hours of waterpark fun at Av Bay. It’s not difficult to find fun at Boyne, it’s very hard to try to fit in all the activities! Sure the resort is taylor-made for family fun but you could also visit Boyne for a weekend getaway with friends or that special someone for a spa getaway.

Summer Camps at Boyne
Boyne Mountain Resort is launching a new camp this summer available to youth ages 12 to 15 years. Camp Edelweiss offers nine weeklong camps scheduled Sundays through Saturdays mid-June through mid-August. The camps include lodging and meals at Boyne Mountain as well as a host of exciting adventure activities that will create lasting memories and friendships.

Camp activities include Zipline Adventures, horseback riding, fly fishing, sunfish sailing, kickball, camp fires, golf, paintball, hiking, movies, hayrides, crafts, geocaching, waterpark fun at Avalanche Bay, tennis, disc golf, swimming, kayaking, volleyball, mountain biking, orienteering, a Hydro Dam Tour and more. For more information, visit their website or call 231-549-7210.

Avalanche Bay to introduce Michigan’s first SuperLoop Slide
The thrilling ride, to be named The Big Couloir, begins in a launch capsule and features a trap door that drops away and propels riders into an enclosed tunnel traveling at speeds up to 38 feet per second through the length of the 360 degree SuperLOOP™ before slowing with a splash.  The Big Couloir welcomes riders 48 inches and taller. The new ride will launch in December of 2013.

“The Big Couloir is a fast, unique, and hair-raising ride,” says Ed Grice, Boyne Mountain Resort’s president and general manager.  “The slide is sure to be a hit with juniors, teens, and adults and will be a great addition to the waterpark.”
