HOW TO EAST THE BACK TO SCHOOL JITTERS

Lisa LaGrou of Oakland County Moms – What are some back to school for parents tips parents can do prior to the first day of school to prepare their kids academically?

Licensed psychotherapist Mia Ozair – Although summer is technically a vacation time, parents can do their children a big favor by using this time to brush up on any deficient academics and use this time to practice and strengthen skills. Many schools now have “summer packets” that are to be done over vacation and turned in on the first day of school. If your school does not offer this, ask for it! Ask your child’s teacher for workbooks and homework to keep your child’s mind engaged over the vacation time.

Lisa LaGrou of Oakland County Moms – What can parents do to help ease their child’s nerves of going back to school?

Licensed psychotherapist Mia Ozair – Reassure your child that no matter what happens there is always a workable solution and that you will be there to help along the way. Encourage a healthy sleep schedule, eating well, and offering up chances to reconnect with school friends over the summer. If the child is really nervous, arrange for him or her to visit the classroom and meet the teacher before the first day of school.

Lisa LaGrou of Oakland County Moms – Can parents make too big of a deal about back to school, thereby causing unnecessary anxiety?

Licensed psychotherapist Mia Ozair – This is a great question and the one answer that comes to mind is that parents can probably do that about any subject! Lol . . . we can tend to overreact or over emphasize things causing an increased stress level for kids. I guess the best suggestion is simply for us as parents to be aware of our own anxieties and stressors and to not allow those things to spill over into our interactions with our kids.

Lisa LaGrou of Oakland County Moms – When should parents seek outside help for their child to make it a successful school year?

Licensed psychotherapist Mia Ozair – If after the first week or so of school your child is not acclimating–academically or socially–it would be smart to first consult with the teacher and go from there. Next in line would be the school counselor or resource person. After that would involve the next tier of administration. It may also be possible to seek the help of professionals in the private arena to add additional support.
