Detroit Snowfall Total Records

Detroit Snowfall Total Records – I hope “we” break the Detroit area all-time snow fall record set in 1880-1881 at 93.6 inches. We’re pretty close this winter with seasonal totals topping over 80 inches. Call me crazy but… I want this winter suffering to go down in history to somehow justify all the misery we have endured.

Detroit Snowfall Total Records

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT a fan of winter. I love all the seasons we enjoy in Metro Detroit. I’m OK with winter until about the 1st week of January. Then, like most Metro Detroiters, the cabin fever sets in and I long for spring. This winter has been beyond agonizing for most of us. I’m starting to feel Jack Nicholson in “The Shining”. Help!

When I was a kid in the late 70s / early 80s, winters were a bit harsh. I remember sometimes the lake in my best friend’s backyard would freeze early and we’d sometimes slip and slide around on the ice as early as Thanksgiving. Snow days and ice storms were common and the sled hills were packed.

Winters in the late 80s and 90s were much more uneventful. An occasional big snowfall, maybe an ice storm, but schools rarely closed and sometimes the whole winter would consist of just cold temperatures and an ugly salt-bleached grass in the front yard.

The winter of 2013 / 2014 has been CRAZY! I can’t remember a winter being so cold, so snowy, so bad, for SO LONG. It’s back to the 1970s and more!

Somehow, I WANT the snowfall record for ourselves so we can justify how bad it has truly been. To me, every dusting of snow and every sub-zero morning from here on out will make every motorcycle ride, every Tigers game and every DTE concert this summer THAT much sweeter. There will be no old codger from the past can say “yeah, but it was worse way back in 19 blankety blank”. Better yet, we could be that old codger!

We’ve come this far! We’ve earned it with every pothole and every swipe of the snow shovel. Let’s get that record and leave no doubt that the worst winter ever was the winter of 2013 / 2014.

ABOUT THE PIC: Pine Knob? Nope, just climbing Mt. St. Iceberg at the Best Buy parking lot. I hope we beat the Detroit Snowfall Total Records, do you?
