DiBella’s Subs Michigan Review – Pics

DiBella’s Subs Michigan Review – Pics, and menu info. Michigan has 6 DiBella’s Sub locations – Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Bingham Farms, Rochester Hills, Shelby Twp, and Troy.

I’m a huge fan of subs and grinders and I’ve certainly reviewed more than my fair share for Oakland County Moms through the years. I love when small restaurants and sandwich shops build their brand locally. You start to hear about them through word of mouth and begin hoping they expand to your area.

I finally had a chance to visit DiBella’s Old-Fashioned Submarines for a review.

DiBella’s Subs is one of those stories and we’re fortunate enough to have 4 Metro Detroit DiBella’s locations (Troy, Bingham Farms, Shelby Twp and Auburn Hills). DiBella’s started in New York nearly 100 years ago and is now gradually expanding through the mid-west.

OK… enough with the history lesson. On to the review!

Dibella’s is fantastic and easily one of my new favorite sandwich places in Metro Detroit. They seem to incorporate all of my favorite qualities from other popular sub shops.

I’d classify Dibella’s Old-Fashioned Submarines as gourmet (or high-end) in terms of quality. They’re like Jersey Mike’s in that regard, but the prices are much more reasonable and right on par with other affordable sub shops. Prices range from $5.99 (for a small) and $9.99 for a large.

DiBella’s offers seven specialty subs on their menu in addition to standard favorites like a Dagwood, Italian sub etc. Unlike most popular sandwich shops, DiBella’s lets you build you customize your own sub from scratch using your choice of up to 3 meats (ham, turkey, capicola, spicy ham, roast beef, Genoa salami, corned beef and bacon). You simply don’t these choices anywhere else. Subs are served either hot or cold and DiBella’s lets you further customize your sub with your choice of 4 cheeses (provolone, american, mozzarella & swiss). Sure, most places let you add and subtract but Dibella’s is oddly one of the few that lets you create, mix and match whatever you want.

DiBella’s has sides typical of most other sandwich chains (like Quizno’s). They offer 3 types of salads, sides like macaronia salad and potato salad, chips, and chocolate chip cookies.

What sets DiBella’s completely apart from other sandwich places is their bread. You can get fresh-baked bread anywhere but Dibella’s sub buns are above and beyond everything else I’ve tried. The “Everything” bun bread is delicious – it’s like an “Everything bagel” in sub bun form.

Dibella’s restaurants are as old-fashioned in decor as their name might indicate. Dark woods, old-timey photos and old-fashioned decorated high ceilings. Very family-friendly with spacious booths (see pics below).

I encountered a couple of service hiccups that I was actually warned in advance about but the food more than made up for the service issues.

DiBella’s quickly became my preferred submarine shop. There are other fine sub shops in Metro Detroit but none seem to incorporate everything fantastic about sub sandwiches quite the way DiBella’s has.
