Engineering for Kids Metro Detroit Review

Engineering for Kids Metro Detroit Review – Review of Lego Robotics class held by an Engineering for Kids Metro Detroit at an Oakland County MI location.

Engineering for Kids holds classes, camps and parties for children interested in science, technology, math and engineering throughout Oakland and Macomb County, Michigan. My kids recently had an opportunity to take part in Engineering for Kids’ LEGO® Robotics Mindstorms™ class.

OAKLAND COUNTY MOMS BUSINESS REVIEWS

Each Engineering for Kids class and program is aimed at giving children the opportunity to explore and learn engineering skills in a fun atmosphere. Engineering for Kids gave my children the chance to take part in a program so we could learn more and write this review. My kids joined the LEGO Robotics Mindstorms class – our class was conveniently held at Brooklands Elementary in Rochester Hills.

Each of the Engineering for Kids programs are held at various locations throughout Oakland and Macomb Counties.

The LEGO® Robotics Mindstorms™ class has the children working with mini robots. Each week, the kids program the robots to do different things. For example, during the earlier part of the engineering course, the kids used a computer program to create paths the robots would take, i.e. circle movements, triangle movements, etc. Another week, they gave the robots “eyes.” Once the robots had eyes, they could sense things in their path. As they see things approaching, the robots would then change direction.

I can’t say my kids are big on their science classes at school. It’s not that they dislike science, but it definitely does not come up as their response to the commonly asked question “What’s your favorite subject in school?” But, with the Engineering for Kids program, every child enjoys it, including my kids. They are thrilled every time I picked them up and they immediately fill me in on all the fun they had.

Here’s where the Engineering for Kids program works… it empowers the kids by giving them a true hands-on experience. In the LEGO Robotics class, their hands on experience allows them to create their own scientific controls for their robot. Each child in the class was partnered with another student, and together they came up with their own unique plan for their robot that differed from everyone else’s.

The class sizes are small enough (about 15) to handle this type of a set-up. And, there are two instructors working with the kids so the student to teacher ratio is better than what you’d get in a normal school classroom setting.

Engineering for Kids offers a highly educational program that is focused and fun. It gets kids excited about science, and the exposure gives kids a chance to discover their love for science.

Engineering for Kids offers a few different science programs, and they run in 6-week segments throughout the school year – science classes after school, evenings, and on the weekends. Some of their classes include Electronic Game Design – Tower Defense Games (using Multimedia Fusion 2 to create their own unique video game); LEGO Robotics Mindstorms (design, program and control fully functioning robotic models); Mechanical Engineering (design, create, test and refine a variety of machines and mechanical systems); and Aerospace Engineering (design, create, test and refine a variety of flying machines. The classes are designed for children ages 4-14.
