Michigan Maple Syrup Events

February and March are the months for Maple Syrup in Michigan! Several Oakland County, Michigan and other local Metro Detroit, MI communities offer events, classes, tutorials and celebrations of harvesting Maple Syrup.

Oakland County, Michigan Maple Syrup Tours, Classes and Events:

Oakland Township Maple Syrup Event: Monster Maples
Saturday, March 16th, 2013 from 1p-2:30p
Cranberry Lake Park (388 West Predmore Road, Oakland Charter Township, MI 48363)
Visit the monster maples at Cranberry Lake Park.  Inside we’ll learn a bit about the tools, techniques and history of maple sugaring. Outside we’ll learn how to identify maple trees and learn how to tap a tree. Then we’ll warm up inside again as we learn how to boil sap down to syrup, do some taste testing and have a maple themed snack. Each participating family will get to take home a tapping kit of their own with the basic supplies needed to tap their own tree. Dress for the weather - wear warm, waterproof boots. Rochester Hills, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Dinosaur Nature Preserve Maple Syrup Events

Help celebrate maple sugar season in Michigan by attending one or more Maple Madness days. Unique, hands-on activities appropriate for families with children of all ages. Pre-registration required. Call 248-656-0999.

Rochester Hills, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Syrup Program & Pancake Breakfast
Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 9a-noon
Van Hoosen Museum (1005 Van Hoosen Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48306, 248-656-4663)
Pancakes topped with Rochester Hills maple syrup. The sap is running and our trees have been tapped. See sap to syrup demonstrations, learn the history of making syrup and enjoy a pancake breakfast, complete with sausage, juice, and hot coffee. Scouting groups are welcome! Advance registration is required. Tickets & Reservations Ticket prices are $3 for Museum members and $5 for non-members. Children under the age of 5 are free. Call to register.

Davisburg, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Sap to Syrup for Pancakes
Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 at 9a
Hart Community Center (495 Broadway inside Mill Pond Park in downtown Davisburg)
You will learn about the tree, how it produces sap and how to turn that sap into syrup. Participants will even have the chance to taste the maple syrup after a sugaring demonstration. We will also have a pancake breakfast at the Hart Community Center following the program. Program is held rain, snow or shine. Please dress weather appropriate. Pre-registration is required. Troy, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Syrup Time
Saturday, March 2nd, 2013, March 9th, 2013 and March 16th, 2013 (various sessions)
Stage Nature Center (6685 Coolidge Highway, Troy, Michigan 48098)
This program starts with a short introduction to maple suryping indoors and then participants can hike the trails to see how sap is collected. Afterwords, participants will stop in the sugar shed and see the wood-stocked sap evaporator in action. The tour finishes with syrup tasting over warm mini-pancakes! Farmington Hills, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Sugaring in Your Own Backyard
Sunday, March 10th and Sunday, March 24th, 2013 from 1p-2:30p
Heritage Park (24725 Farmington Road, Farmington Hills, MI)
Celebrate one of the first signs of Spring. Discover the basics of making maple syrup from you own Maple tree. We will identify and select a Maple tree, collect the sap, boil it down, and turn it into delicious syrup. The afternoon will finish with a PURE maple syrup treat and some equipment to get you started at home. Cost is $7 per person or $25 per family (4 people). Call 248-871-2509 for info.

White Lake, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Sugaring
Saturdays and Sundays in March, 2013/Weekdays for school programs
Indian Springs Metropark (5200 Indian Trail, White Lake, MI 48386)
Learn the history of maple sugaring and take a hike out to the sugar bush. Discover how to choose and tap a sugar maple, then go to the sugar shack to see how the collected sap is boiled down to make maple syrup. Sap collection starter kits available for purchase. Preregistration is required for all programs. Weekday programs (Wednesday through Friday) during March are available by appointment to schools and organized groups. Dexter, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Journey to the Sugar Bush
February 23rd, 24th, March 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th various times

Take a journey to the sugar bush on a guided maple syrup tour. You will travel back in time and experience how maple syrup has been made over the years. You may also get a chance to tap a tree. Chelsea, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Sugar Festival

It’s time for that traditional rite of spring – tapping 
maple trees. Observe demonstrations of the whole process of making maple syrup from collecting the sap to the evaporation process. A film will show visitors the old-time methods used to make maple syrup.  Maple products will be available for purchase. Contact 734-475-3170 for more info.

Dearborn, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Let's Tap Some Maple Trees!
Saturday, February 16th, 2013 from 1p-3p
University of Michigan Dearborn Environmental Interpretive Center (4901 Evergreen Road, Dearborn, Michigan, phone 313-593-5338)
Getting ready for another season of making maple syrup involves tapping the trees first. Join EIC as they walk to the campus “sugar bush” and use hand augers to drill small tap holes in the sugar maple trees there. Stop along the way to observe and discuss clues in bark, branches, and buds that will help us distinguish sugar maples from other similar tree species. You’ll also learn the techniques of assessing and tapping the most suitable sugar maple trees. All ages welcome. Dress appropriately for weather and unpaved ground conditions in the Environmental Study Area. Preregistration required!

Dearborn, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Syrup Tour
Saturday, March 9th, 2013 from 1p-3p
University of Michigan Dearborn Environmental Interpretive Center (4901 Evergreen Road, Dearborn, Michigan, phone 313-593-5338)
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the woods to see the maple trees that have buckets  hanging on them for sap to drip into. Along the way EIC interpreters will share tips on identifying the right trees for tapping before there are leaves on the trees. At the end of our walk you'll gather ‘round the sap stove to see (and smell) syrup being prepared. The syrup chef will send you on your way home with a tasty sample of fresh maple syrup prepared on site this year. Yum! All ages welcome. Dress appropriately for outdoor activity on unpaved walking conditions. Preregistration required!

Northville Township, Michigan, Maple Syrup Event: Maple Syrup Tour
Saturdays and Sundays in March, 2013. Tours begin promptly at 1p, 2p and 3p.
Maybury Farms (50165 Eight Mile approximately 1 ¼ miles west of Beck, Northville Twp, MI 48167)
Take a hayride to the Maple tree grove, tap the trees, bring sap back to evaporator and watch how maple syrup is made. Your family will not only see all of the steps in producing maple syrup but they will also take part in the process. Maple syrup and maple syrup products for purchase in our General Store in the Welcome Center. Admission is $6.00 per person, 2 and under free. Dress warmly and boots are a must. Belleville, Michigan Maple Syrup Event: Maple Sugaring Through the Ages
Saturday, March 9th, 2013 at 10a
