Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill – Rochester Hills – Review
Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill is a new restaurant, located in the Village of Rochester Hills where the old Baja Fresh used to be. I checked it out recently and was eager to review it since my husband and I both love the Mongolian grill style of cooking.
Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill is decorated with what I would call a modern and classy feel. Dark wood tables and black concrete floors offset by deep burgundy walls and ceiling make for a warm and inviting atmosphere. The mood is further enhanced by local sports tributes all throughout. You will find logo paintings of OU, Lions, Tigers, etc. adding some fun to the decor.
The staff at Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill is very courteous. My husband and I went during lunch and were greeted nicely as soon as we entered. And the General Manager is very hands on, delivering food and making sure everyone is having a great experience.
After being seated, our server approached the table. Here’s where we found that the Flat Top Grill is a bit more complicated than the typical grill. It didn’t bother me at all, but my husband would have preferred it to be a bit simpler. But, remember, this is coming from a simple meat and potatoes kind of guy.
So, the process at the Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill is similar to other Mongolian style restaurants, but has more options and “rules.” Here’s the process in a nutshell: use the black bowl for the veggies/toppings and the smaller red bowl for the meats. Add your sauces to the ingredients in the black bowl. Grab a wooden numbered stick from your table setting and write your name on it so the server knows where to deliver the cooked meal. Take your bowls to the grill. Pick additional color coded stick(s) that add and change up your dish. For example, one stick will add egg, another provides lettuce wraps to go with your dish, and yet another (my absolute favorite) will get you Roti Prata – a super tasty, chewy, flat, fried flour-based pancake that is cooked over a flat grill. It was my first time trying it and the Roti Prata at Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill had me saying “Tortilla who?”
I like all the “details” at Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill. It sets Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill apart from the other grill restaurants because it gives you more options and allows for more variations with the food. Another difference is that there is no waiting at the grill. Drop off your bowls, and your server will bring your cooked meal right to your table.
You can’t go wrong preparing your dish at Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill. The sauces are categorized, i.e. soy based, sweet and sours, spicy…. and can be mixed. You pick any “toppings” you like and they all go together well. There are proteins to select from such as sausage, chicken, beef, fish. And, if you need help, the staff will happily follow you through the process and help you along the way.
Flat Top Stir-Fry Grill is a great restaurant for allergies. I’m not quite sure what their policies are for cleaning the grill, but I do know that they inquire. Our waitress asked us right at the beginning if we had any allergies or dietary restrictions. I appreciate this and look forward to bringing my allergy-ridden daughter here for a meal.
