The Friendship Circle & LifeTown – West Bloomfield, MI Non-Profit Support for Special Needs

Posted by Lisa LaGrou September 14, 2012 Non-Profits, Oakland County

The Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield, Michigan provides assistance and support to the families of children with special needs. The Friendship Circle non-profit was founded on the idea that within each person is a soul, and that soul is the same regardless of any limitations that may surround it.

Until recently, I had never heard of Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Thankfully, I was introduced to the creator of this amazing effort and had an opportunity to explore it further.

Many children with special needs need socialization, life skills, and a place to go where they can thrive. This is the place. From the art room to the Lifetown. There’s more here to do than can fit in a day!

Imagine several different, exciting and inviting rooms where each focuses on a different skill or goal. The different rooms address specific needs, such as gross motor skills, sensory, living independently, etc. Imagine each child with special needs being paired up with a volunteer who cares and spends quality time with him/her. There are so many areas and opportunities for children with special needs to get help, feel comforted, socialize, and have fun at Friendship Circle. The entire facility was built around the needs of these children.

My kids and I lived a new experience at Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield recently. We were invited out for a tour and got to see firsthand, how a child with special needs benefits from this beautiful place. As part of the visit, we were each given a disability to live out as we explored the Lifetown. The challenge brought on an empathetic understanding of daily life with a disability.

The Lifetown is a set up that simulates a real town. There are streets with traffic lights and walking lights. There is a bank for the children to withdraw money, and places to spend it so they learn how to manage the money. There’s a doctor’s office and a dentist office so the children can learn about the experience in a comfortable setting. There’s a drug store where they can make a purchase, a pet store where they can feed and pet the animals, a library where they can actually check out books… It’s amazing.

The video above shows the different rooms in the beginning segment, and the Lifetown at the latter end of the video.
