I had the opportunity to cover the 45th Annual Art & Apples in Rochester infamous apple pie and dessert contest.
Judges this year included: Mayor Bryan Barnett Elizabeth Hawthorne (Miss Oakland County) Kim Russel (City Council, Rochester) Jason Carr from FOX2 Taryn Asher from FOX2 Mike Hack from Whole Foods Market
Eleven pies and 11 desserts made for a powerfully sweet aroma not even the strongest breeze could break. The judges had no problem getting through samples of each pie and dessert. The challenge came during the deliberations. Mayor Barnett, Elizabeth Hawthorne, and Kim Russel were the dessert judges; and Jason Carr, Taryn Asher and Mike Hack judged the pies.
When I asked Jason Carr if it was difficult to sample pie after pie and if they all just started to taste the same after a while, he replied, "No, we made sure to rinse our pallettes with water. The entries were very distinct from one another. The winner was a unanimous decision. It was a clearcut winner." Mayor Barnett responded to my question of whether there was a clearcut winner with "I wouldn't say there was a clearcut winner. There were several that rose to the top. We have a lot of baking talent in our community. There were several different kinds of ingredients used (chocolate, caramel...) which made for a lot of varieties."
