Learn Foreign Languages – Mango Languages

Posted by Lisa LaGrou January 6, 2011 Solutions

altMy parents are bilingual, as are many of my relatives. I have tried all my life to learn how to speak the Italian language, and I must admit, I wouldn’t survive a day trying to get around in Italy.

I recently tried Mango Passport, a language learning tool that I downloaded from the Mango Languages website. I chose Italian, and I got to work.

What I really like about Mango:

  • You don’t have to leave your house
  • You can work at your own pace, unlike a classroom setting
  • The set up is very effective – more on this later
  • Kids love it

Finally, I found a language learning tool that is convenient for me. The set up of the Mango language lessons is very effective. You would really have to see it for yourself to understand how I am trying to explain it, but I will do my best to give you a good idea. You scroll through lessons. Each subsequent lesson builds on the previous language lesson.  The program teaches you words, and “tests” you by asking you to repeat them back. You try to think of the words before they are revealed. You can even record your responses with your computer’s mic and play them back in sync with the guide to see how close you are in your pronunciation.

Mango Passport is a GREAT language learning tool for kids. My kids had little interest in learning Italian, until they saw me using Mango. Then, we were all fighting over it. My daughter loved to record herself speaking the language and then play it back to see if she said it correctly. The review techniques in the program are effective as well. My son was retaining what he learned and carrying it over to the next language lesson.

Overall, Mango Passport is made up of several lessons (52 for Italian) in 10 Chapters. It’s a pretty concise lesson that will give you the basics in learning a foreign language. I did not walk away from this fluent in Italian, but I would definitely feel more comfortable about taking a trip to Italy. I might even impress my cousins a bit.

  • Here are the foreign language lessons offered by Mango:

    Chinese (Mandarin)

More languages will be added to Passport in the coming months.

Note: Mango gave me access to Mango Passport free-of-charge, but the opinions reflected in my writeup are my own.
