There are plenty of fun things to do in and around Metro Detroit this weekend. This list will try to highlight some of the Metro Detroit weekend events – big and small – for kids and families. I’m going to be using this article to post events and activities that are either free, or at least family affordable.

Farmington Hills MI Weekend Event – Antique Appraisal
Longacre House (24705 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills, MI)
Bring up to three antiques to be valued by renowned appraisers from DuMouschelle Galleries. You will have 10 minutes with staff members to discuss your items and find out the value of your antiques. Appointments are necessary and can be scheduled by calling the number below. The appraisers can evaluate jewelry, artwork, books, furniture, dolls, toys or games (no guns). This party is perfect for kids ages 4-12. There will be games, make unique and themed crafts, sing Karaoke, and more! Ages & up. This is a great opportunity to practice the skills learned in gymnastics or just have fun! Jump on the trampoline or flip around in foam pits. Detroit MI Weekend Event - Friday Night Live at the DIA
Detroit Film Theatre: Stop the Pounding Heart: 7 p.m.
Stop the Pounding Heart is set on a rural Texas farm where 14-year-old Sara is one of 12 siblings being home-schooled and infused with strict fundamentalist values and moral guidelines. Director Roberto Minervini gives us a humane portrait of a family isolated from the modern technology and social activities others take for granted. Tickets are $8.50 and $6.50 for DIA members, seniors and students.

The Detroit Institute of Arts is offering free bus transportation to the DIA from 6 Oakland County Locations. Visitors can browse the DIA, view exhibitions, participate in an art-making activity and/or enjoy the DIA’s two restaurants. Think of it as an “old-school” school field trip! Royal Oak MI Weekend Event – Holistic Health and Wellness Expo

The Holistic Health and Wellness Expo will showcase alternative-natural methods to manage physical and mental ailments including pain, stress, and more. White Lake MI Weekend Event – Maple Sugaring
Indian Springs Metropark (5200 Indian Trail, White Lake, MI 48386)
Participants will learn how the local American Indians discovered the sugaring process and how they shared this treat with the settlers. Hike out to the Sugarbush where we’ll guide your group in the proper tapping of a maple tree. After you have tapped a tree, check out the evaporator to see how the maple sap is boiled down into syrup. Of course, no one leaves without a taste of pure maple syrup! Troy MI Weekend Event – Maple Syrup Time

This program starts with a short introduction to maple suryping indoors and then participants can hike the trails to see how sap is collected. Afterwords, participants will stop in the sugar shed and see the wood-stocked sap evaporator in action. The tour finishes with syrup tasting over warm mini-pancakes! Milford MI Weekend Event – Maple’s Sweet Story
Kensington Metropark (2240 W Buno Rd, Milford, MI)
Take a guided walk through the farm’s sugar bush. Learn how to pick the right tree, then watch how maple trees are tapped and the sap is collected. Stop by the French and Native camp to hear and see how these techniques have changed through the years. Then visit the sugar shack to see and smell the sap being boiled down into maple syrup. Real maple syrup products will be available for sale–taste a sample at the end of your tour. Tours begin every half-hour. Call 810-227-8912 for cost info and to register.

Northville Twp MI Weekend Event – The Maple Syrup Experience
Maybury Farms (50165 Eight Mile approximately 1 ¼ miles west of Beck, Northville Twp, MI 48167)
Take a hayride to the Maple tree grove, tap the trees, bring sap back to evaporator and watch how maple syrup is made. Your family will not only see all of the steps in producing maple syrup but they will also take part in the process. Visit the monster maples at Cranberry Lake Park. Inside you’ll learn a bit about the tools, techniques and history of maple sugaring. Outside you’ll learn how to identify maple trees and learn how to tap a tree. Then we’ll warm up inside again as we learn how to boil sap down to syrup, do some taste testing and have a maple themed snack. Each participating family will get to take home a tapping kit of their own with the basic supplies needed to tap their own tree. Dress for the weather – wear warm, waterproof boots.
