There are plenty of fun things to do in and around Metro Detroit this weekend. This list will try to highlight some of the Metro Detroit weekend events - big and small - for kids and families. I’m going to be using this article to post events and activities that are either free or at least family affordable.

This twilight event features local restaurants offering samples of their best recipes while local distributors pour their vineyards’ finest wine for tasting. Detroit Institute of Arts (5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, Michigan 48202)
Music: Tribute to Dorothy Ashby with the Brandee Younger Quartet: 7 p.m. ONLY
Dorothy Ashby was a Detroit harpist who, along with Alice Coltrane, proved that the harp was an instrument that could be used in bebop jazz as effectively as the saxophone. Harpist Brandee Younger will honor Ashby’s spirit with a new band and contemporary arrangements of this legendary Detroit artist’s work.

The last swim of the season in our outdoor pool is always reserved for the dogs! Sessions are broken down by weight class with each lasting 30 minutes. Please sign up for the session that is weight appropriate for your dog:

  • 30 lbs & under 9:30-10:00 am
  • 31-79 lbs 10:15-10:45 am
  • 80 lbs & up 11:00-11:30 am
  • 31-79 lbs 11:45-12:15 pm

Swimming and romping in the water is reserved for the dogs. Owners are allowed to go up to their knees. No one under the age of 12 is allowed on the pool deck. Cost: $7 for residents, $8 for nonresidents. Call 248-451-1900 to register your pet.

Oakland County Parks Pet Vaccinations clinics for dogs and cats are low-cost and presented by All About Animals. Rabies, canine distemper, bordetella, feline distemper and feline leukemia vaccines available for $10 for each vaccine. Heartworm test and microchips are $20 each. This production uses the original puppets Dick Myers crafted decades ago. Seth Shaffer, directed by Bart Roccoberton from the University of Connecticut Puppet Arts Program, presents a puppet Cinderella like no other.
