There are plenty of fun things to do in and around Metro Detroit this weekend. This list will try to highlight some of the Metro Detroit weekend events - big and small - for kids and families. I’m going to be using this article to post events and activities that are either free or at least family affordable.

Juried show, approximately 150 accepted artists of all discipline including sculpture, paintings, clay, glass, fiber, jewelry, photography, wood and more – high quality juried fine art and fine craft show for the purpose of artistry and community enrichment. Juried by art professionals who are in the art industry and who have an art education. Located in West Bloomfield on Powers and Daly Roads, south of Maple, west of Orchard Lake Road. Plenty of FREE parking behind Beaumont Medical Center and Barnes & Noble! The focus is visual arts – you will see artists that do not participate in other Michigan events. $5 admission. Friday, 5pm – 9pm, Saturday, 10am – 9pm, and Sunday, 10am – 5pm. Live entertainment and great food will enhance your culinary experience while enjoying the great artists. Detroit Institute of Arts (5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, Michigan 48202)
Music: JP Jofre Quintet: 7 & 8:30 p.m.
JP Jofre is an Argentinian composer and bandoneon player in the style of Astor Piazzolla. His quintet will play music from his CD “Hard Tango,” which includes his own compositions, as well as works by Piazzolla, Leo Brouwer and Fernando Otero. The quintet features Ron Wasserman (bass), Eric Silberger (violin), Amy Kang (cello) and Daniela Candillari (piano).

South Lyon Michigan Weekend Event: Free Summer Concert
McHattie Park (400 Dorothy Street, South Lyon, MI)
The free events will take place at the gazebo near the Witch’s Hat Depot in McHattie Park. Overflow parking is available at the South Lyon First Methodist Church. The shows begin at 7p and run until 8:30p. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy! This Friday’s concert: Paradise Band (Tropical Rock).

Detroit Michigan Weekend Event: Rockin’ on the Riverfront Free Summer Concerts
GM Renaissance Center River Walk
Admission to the concerts is always free and no tickets are necessary. Viewing space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, but outside food, beverages and coolers are not permitted. This Friday’s Concert is – Starship.

Rochester Hills Michigan Weekend Event: Rock N Bowl Teen Nights
Classic Lanes (2145 Avon Industrial Drive, Rochester Hills, MI 48309)
For just $10 teens can enjoy live local music, door prizes, 3 hours of unlimited glow bowling, contests, and food specials at Rock n Bowl at Classic Lanes. The live music and unlimited bowling starts at 8p and runs until 11p. Classic lanes have booked local music acts to play the teen through college favorites.

Birmingham MI Weekend Event: Birmingham Day on the Town 2014
Downtown Birmingham
Birmingham hosts its sidewalk sales and biggest retail event of the year. Sidewalk Sales shoppers will have enjoy free parking for the entire Birmingham Day on the Town event. Birmingham Day on the Town will also feature fun for kids! The Bike Parade starts near the steps of City Hall at 8:30a with a bike decorating contest. A Kids Zone will be located on Maple from 10a-7p with kids crafts and a Kid Zone will be up and running from 10a-2p. A bouncehouse will be set up at Woodward in front of Churchill’s. Kids can even enjoy mini-golf and rock climbing on Merrill. Birmingham Day on the Town will have live entertainment at different stages and entertainers strolling through the streets.

Shelby Twp Michigan Weekend Event: Growing Up Green Festival
Packard Proving Grounds (49965 Van Dyke Ave, Shelby Twp, MI)
The Growing Up Green festival aims to educate, empower and equip families to lead a healthier, more natural, lifestyle without breaking the bank. There will be live music by The Gratitude Steel Band, a babywearing contest, yoga classes for kids and adults, cooking classes, and essential oil classes. Bring the kids into any Lowe’s store and build a FREE wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch, and a certification of merit upon completion of their project. You must pre-register for this event. Metro Detroit Michigan Weekend Event: McBiker Annual Motorcycle Rally
McDonals (5854 Highland Road, Waterford, MI 48327)
Motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to support the Ronald McDonald Houses of Ann Arbor and Detroit on Sunday, July 27 for the McBiker McDonald’s 16th Annual Motorcycle Rally. The event, a 100-mile round trip ride through some of southeast Michigan’s best motorcycle roads, hosts an average of 500 motorcyclists every year. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and runs throughout the day at McBiker McDonald’s, 5854 Highland Road, Waterford. The rally will end at the Shark Club, Waterford at M-59, west of Airport Road at 4 p.m. Registration is $25 and includes an after party with a delicious buffet, auction and raffle prizes. The Ronald McDonald Houses provide a home-away-from-home for families of those who are seriously ill and hospitalized nearby.
