There are plenty of fun things to do in and around Metro Detroit this weekend. This list will try to highlight some of the Metro Detroit weekend events - big and small - for kids and families. I’m going to be using this article to post events and activities that are either free or at least family affordable.

Rochester MI Weekend Event – Art and Apples 2014
Municipal Park (400 Sixth St., Rochester, Michigan 48307)
Enjoy more than 285 artists exhibits, the annual applie pie and dessert contest, live entertainment, food, fun for kids, and more during the annual festival! Hours are from 4p-7:30p on Fri, 9a-7:30p on Sat, and 9a-4p on Sun.

Detroit Michigan Weekend Event - Friday Night Live at the DIA
Detroit Institute of Arts (5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, Michigan 48202)
Music: Glorious Moments Baroque Ensemble: 7 & 8:30 p.m.
Glorious Moments presents music from the Baroque era on period instruments. The ensemble, featuring MeeAe Nam (soprano), Daniel Foster (violin), Diane Winder (cello), Kiri Tollasken (cornetto) and Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra (harpsichord), perform works by Handel, Bach and others.

Build. Learn. Create. Kids workshops are FREE How-to workshops designed toward kids ages 5-12. The hands on sessions are offered on the first Saturday of each month between 9am and noon at all Home Depot locations.

Troy, Michigan Weekend Event: Dog Water Palooza Dog Swim
Troy Aquatic Center (3425 Civic Center Dr, Troy, MI 48083)
Dogs are invited for a 45 minute dogs only swim. Dogs must be at least 6 mos old with current license. Registration is required. The rain date is September 7. Cost is $8 for residents or $10 for non residents. Under 40 lbs swims from 10a-10:45a, 41-65lbs swims from 11a-11:45a, dogs 66 lbs or more swim from noon-12:45p. Call 248-524-3514 to register.

Waterford Oaks Waterpark (1702 Scott Lake Road, Waterford, MI)
A low-cost vaccination clinic for dogs and cats takes place this day from 10a-2p. For pet safety, please bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier. Dogs Only Swim event 55-minute time slot is based on canine weight. Contests each hour for Best Wet Look and Best Swimsuit. Auburn Hills MI Weekend Event – Parade of Stars Bluegrass Festival 2014
Civic Center Park (1827 N. Squirrel Road, Auburn Hills, Michigan)
Auburn Hills Bluegrass Festival 2014 will feature music by Claire Lynch, Sister Sadie, and Flatt Lonesome. The host band for this year’s Parade of Stars Bluegrass Festival will be The Special Consensus. Parade of Stars is held rain or shine. Refreshments are available on site and so is the opportunity to purchase band CDs and merchandise. Parade of Stars / Auburn Hills Bluegrass Festival has a $5 entry fee per adult; students and children are free.
