Monk Beer Abbey Royal Oak Review

In the place of old Cafe Habana in the historic building at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets emerges the new Monk Beer Abbey Restaurant. Monk Beer Abbey restaurant is part of the expansion project of the Bastone Brewery. All of the restaurants are under the same ownership, and we’ll soon see a second level and an outdoor patio as part of the expansion as well.

The Monk Beer Abbey restaurant has some minor updates with newly replaced wood trims in the interior, and a new bar. The atmosphere is dark and rich with woods and dark hues.

Everything at the Monk Beer Abbey Royal Oak restaurant was designed around bringing craft beer and unique menu selections to downtown Royal Oak. The Monk Beer Abbey restaurant offers highly unique menu items with both the food and drinks.

On the Monk Beer Abbey menu, you’ll find tenderloin sliders, unique sandwiches that are served on waffles,  burgers that aren’t the norm…i.e. made with ham, eggs, pork belly and more. Chef Robert at the Monk Beer Abbey got quite creative even with the most simple dishes. For example, you can order fries, or you can order fries fried in duck fat. And, then he’ll throw in some creative sauces for dipping. The food menu at the Monk Beer Abbey restaurant is not overloaded. There are a few options to choose from that offer something for everyone… except the salad lovers.

I ordered the Beef Tenderloin Sliders and the tenderloin was super tender, cooked to perfection and topped with a tasty Bearnaise sauce and a super soft ciabatta roll.

The beverage menu at the Monk Beer Abbey restaurant is far more extensive than the food menu. A full listing of Belgian beers makes for some tough decisions. The beer list includes the usual Bastone beers as well as the Belgian beers. Dark ales, light ales, fruity and more. The staff at the Monk Beer Abbey restaurant are very knowledgeable. A Cicerone helped show me the way to a light ale and I was very grateful. The Monk Beer Abbey restaurant also offers a nice sized French wine selection.

The Monk Beer Abbey restaurant just opened on April 15th. Currently, seating is limited to the few tables inside that seat over 30, but will soon be added to with an outdoor patio that will seat 36 right off Fifth street in downtown Royal Oak.

Monk is open daily from 4pm – 2am for dinner service only.
