Oakland County Cross Country Ski Lessons – review and video of Cross Country Ski Skiing lessons at Oakland County Parks’ Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston MI
I have attempted to go cross-country skiing with a friend back when I was in college. We were surprised at how much of a workout it was, but how much it didn’t necessarily feel like one and it was so much fun at the same time. I have thought about going back since then, so I decided to take the Oakland County Parks cross-country ski lessons at Independence Oaks County Park as part of their Oakland County Parks Ski School program to help me out and give me some tips and professional cross country ski instruction. Plus, I wanted to take the kids along and have them try it out as well.
The Oakland County cross country ski lessons through Oakland County Parks are great for all ages. Volunteer ski patrol personnel hold the classes and take you out in groups to explore the park while you learn how to cross-country ski. The staff are kind, patient, and very helpful. We learned the basics of cross country skiing instruction – how to put on skis, how to get up after falling, how to dress for the weather and the activity, how to “brake,” how to go down hills, etc. The staff was very encouraging and calmed any fears the kids or I had. My “hesitant” daughter was even coasting downhill happily.

The cost for the Oakland County Parks cross-country ski lessons is extremely reasonable – $15 for ski rental and lesson. The lessons run for two hours, and then you’re free to continue practicing for another hour or so before turning in the skis. And, if you want to go back to do some cross-country skiing on your own, ski rental (including all the equipment) is available.
