Where can a book take you this summer??
From Saturday, June 1 to Saturday, August 3, we’ll be exploring Oh, The Places You Will Go... When You Read! Will it be to the south of France? To Mars? To a dark and scary place? Wherever it will be, join in on the fun of Summer Reading for Grownups. Sign up at the 2nd level Fiction Desk, receive your book log and then check back in with the librarians as you read or listen to your books. For every book read, you’ll get one entry into the Grand Prize drawing. Four lucky winners will receive a sturdy Friends of the Southfield Library book tote and the chance to fill it to the brim with books from the Friends Book Cellar. The Grand Prize drawing will take place on Monday, August 5.

Heather Jones & Jones’n
Heather and her formidable band, Jones’n, form an act that consistently brings
audiences to their feet with diverse musical selections infused with rockin’ blue collar grit and soul. Heather Jones’ voice is a jewel; it’s deeply honest and soulful, recalling the great classic soul singers of yesteryear. Donny Jones on lead guitar & vocals, Randy Dunckley on bass, and LaNerrick Harris on drums round out the band. They have been performing all over the state for over seven years, including appearances at private shows, bars, clubs, and many Blues Festivals.

August
Glemie Beasley and the Down Home Blues Band
Glemie Dean Beasley was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. He learned to sing while working on a plantation in Arkansas as a kid. Later, he learned to play the guitar, performing alongside such local Blues luminaries as Washboard Willie, Eddie Burns, Little Sonny, Little Junior Cannaday and Bobo Jenkins. He eventually formed his own backup band, the Down Home Blues Band. This is a show not to be missed: Beasley’s public appearances nowadays are rare and we are lucky to have him appear at the Library.

Nighthawks Jazz Orchestra
Lead by saxophonist Joshua James, the N.J.O. is one of Detroit’s premier musical organizations. While the ensemble’s heart beats with the pulse of jazz, the N.J.O. performs original compositions and unique arrangements of jazz standards, pop tunes, and whatever else its musicians can get their hands on. The Orchestra has four woodwinds, three brass, and a three-piece rhythm section which deliver a vibrant and fresh sound to all of their unique instrumental and vocal arrangements. The ensemble blends the music seamlessly, creating a musical experience that is not to be missed.
