Royal Oak Schools Approve New Anti-Bullying Policy

Posted by Lisa LaGrou April 17, 2012 News

altThe Royal Oak Schools Board of Education approved a revised Anti-Bullying Policy at its meeting on April 12, 2012. The new policy brings the district into compliance with Matt’s Safe Schools Law, Public Act 241, passed in Lansing in December, 2011.

The new policy meets or surpasses all mandates in the new state law, including provisions for developing procedures, handling investigations, and documenting alleged bullying incidents. The policy is being posted on the district website where copies of all district polices may be found.

“Passing a policy is not a destination, rather it is a milestone in an ongoing journey, “ said Superintendent of Schools Shawn Lewis-Lakin. “At each building level, we have teams actively engaged in developing and implementing programs aimed at the prevention of bullying or other aggressive behaviors. This work is being done under the umbrella of our school improvement plan, which identifies as a goal improving student engagement and developing positive behavior interventions and supports.”

At each level – elementary, middle school, and high school – anti-bullying programs are based on research based “best practices” in bullying prevention and intervention. Central to such programs is the commitment to change the climate of the school and its expectations for student behavior through long-term systemic initiatives.

Families are encouraged to contact building principals for additional information regarding anti‐bullying initiatives and opportunities for involvement. Bullying and harassment online is a community as well as school concern. In partnership with community groups, including the Royal Oak Support our Youth Task Force, the district encourages families to monitor children’s online activity. Lewis-Lakin encourages families to explore the resources for online safety and preventing online
harassment and cyber-bullying which are available at:
