Southfield Public Library Events

Southfield Public Library is offering several events for toddlers, kids and teens throughout the month.

Youth Programs

Story Times
Registration is not required for Story Times. Drop in on the day(s) you would like to attend.

Baby Bounce Story Time

This program introduces books to the very young with simple stories, songs, finger plays, social interaction and playing.
Who:  6 – 18 month olds with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 10:00 am – November 4, 18, 25
Where: Space Station Program Room

Toddler Story Time

Toddlers will hear stories, learn finger plays, develop social interaction skills and enjoy free-play time. Limited to 25 toddlers per session.
Who:  1 ½ – 3 year olds, with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 11:00 am November 4, 18, 25 and Thursdays at 11:00 am November 6, 13, 20
Where: Space Station Program Room

Preschool Story Time

Preschoolers will enjoy fun stories, learn finger plays and sing songs.
Who:  3 – 5 year olds not yet in kindergarten, with caregiver
When:  Thursdays at 10:00 am – November 6, 13, 20
Where: Space Station Program Room


Read to Kassie
Read to Kassie is a program where children can drop in and read to a certified therapy dog.  Come by on any of the dates and times Kassie is here and enjoy reading to a very good listener.  Drop in, no registration necessary.
Who: Kindergartners – 4th graders
When: Wednesdays at 6:00 – 7:30 pm – None scheduled

Build with Legos plus you can be a part of a variety of fun programs that will change every month including science experiments, crafts, games and more! In grades 6th and up? Then come get an application to volunteer at this event, earn volunteer hours and have a blast!
Who: Residents or students of Southfield or Lathrup Village in Grades 3-8 and volunteers grades 6-12
When: Monday, November 24 at 7:00 pm

Arts @ Your Library
Once Upon A Time
Once Upon a Time is an engaging collection of favorite children’s classics including Three Billy Goats Gruff, Reynard the Fox and The Three Little Pigs that are sure to delight.
Presented by Wild Swan Theater, three performers and a musician create all the magic inherent in these timeless stories making this theater experience unforgettable.
Who: Preschool-3rd grade
When: Monday, November 3 at 7:00 pm
Where: Meeting Room

Jazz and Blues
$5.00 admission.
Show your Friends of the Southfield Public Library membership card to receive a $2.00 discount. No charge for children under 12. Sponsored by the Friends of Southfield Public Library and the Detroit Blues Society.

Lady Sunshine and the X Band
Lady Sunshine was born to sing the blues. Born on a plantation near the Mississippi Delta in West Helena Arkansas, Lady Sunshine grew up singing gospel music as a little girl and is definitely the ‘real deal’! Sunshine is the consummate entertainer and that deep soulful southern hunger that drives her is apparent both on and off the stage through her heartfelt originals and down-to-earth demeanor. She moved to Ann Arbor in 1975 and began performing professionally in genres such as Blues, R&B, Gospel, Soul & Jazz.

Teen Programs

Junior Library Board
Help the Library better serve you and your friends! We are looking for teens who live or go to school in Southfield or Lathrup Village and will jump in and help improve the Library by:
• Suggesting materials for the Young Adult collection
• Recommending program ideas you and your friends will enjoy
• Assisting with a variety of projects that positively impact the Library, its staff and the entire community
• Helping the Library make your visit the best possible
Who:  6th – 12th graders
When:  Monday, November 10 at 7:00 pm
Where: Meeting Room

Wii Game On!
Take turns playing your favorite Wii games. Enjoy board and card games before and after your Wii fun!
Who: 6th – 12th graders
When: None Scheduled
Where: Meeting Room

Hang Time
This is a time to work on group projects and other school work, play board games, try crafting or Wii gaming as well as enjoy visits from special guests.  Bring a snack and join us. You are sure to have a good time and accomplish a thing or two!

Family and Friends Programs

Friends Book Cellar

Wednesday, November 5 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Thursday, November 6 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday, November 8 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Show your Friends Membership Card and receive a 10% discount on Book Cellar purchases.

Donations in good condition are accepted year round. Please place books in the book chute by the Circulation Desk along with magazines not older than three months. Do not put audio visual materials down the chute; hand them to staff at the desk. Take large donations to the loading dock on the north side of the Library. Your donations keep our book sales successful!
