Southfield Public Library Events

Southfield Public Library is offering several events for toddlers, kids and teens throughout the month.

Youth Programs

Story Times
Registration is not required for Story Times. Drop in on the day(s) you would like to attend.

Baby Bounce Story Time

This program introduces books to the very young with simple stories, songs, finger plays, social interaction and playing.
Who:  6 – 18 month olds with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 10:00 am - September 23, 30 / October 7, 14
Where: Space Station Program Room

Toddler Story Time

Toddlers will hear stories, learn finger plays, develop social interaction skills and enjoy free-play time. Limited to 25 toddlers per session.
Who:  1 ½ – 3 year olds, with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 11:00 am September 23, 30 / October 7, 14 and Thursdays at 11:00 am September 18, 25 / October 2, 9, 16
Where: Space Station Program Room

Preschool Story Time

Preschoolers will enjoy fun stories, learn finger plays and sing songs.
Who:  3 – 5 year olds not yet in kindergarten, with caregiver
When:  Thursdays at 10:00 am - September 18, 25 / October 2, 9, 16

School-Age:

Read to Kassie
Read to Kassie is a program where children can drop in and read to a certified therapy dog.  Come by on any of the dates and times Kassie is here and enjoy reading to a very good listener.  Drop in, no registration necessary.
Who: Kindergartners – 4th graders
When: Wednesdays at 6:00 – 7:30 pm – None scheduled

LEGO Plus
Build with Legos plus you can be a part of a variety of fun programs that will change every month including science experiments, crafts, games and more! In grades 6th and up? Then come get an application to volunteer at this event, earn volunteer hours and have a blast!
Who: Residents or students of Southfield or Lathrup Village in Grades 3-8 and volunteers grades 6-12
When: Monday, October 27 at 7:00 pm

Science @ Your Library
Air: The Invisible Wonder
In this awesome program, students learn about air and our atmosphere through a series of ultra-cool demonstrations showing the weight of air, the effects of atmosphere and the properties and action involved in a vacuum. Plus, a highly-visual display of the effects of Bernoulli’s Principal of Fluid Dynamics! Presented by MobilEd Productions.
Who: Kindergarten – 5th graders
When: Monday, October 6 at 7:00 pm

$5.00 admission.

Papa Lee and the Body Shop Blues Review Band, featuring Little Arthur
Band leader Clyde W. “Papa” Lee, Sr. began playing drums when he was in middle school in Flint and he is still at it more than 60 years later. He traveled and recorded with the Detroit Emeralds in the 70s and played the famous Club Paradise in Idlewild, Michigan. He’s played with John Lee Hooker, BoBo Jenkins, Washboard Willie, Chicago Pete and just about every well-known Detroit Blues artist during the past 50 years, including Eddie Burns, Calvin Frazier, Willie D. Warren, Mr Bo & Little Mac Collins, Uncle Jessie White and the Butler Twins. Papa Lee knows the Blues.
Joining drummer Papa Lee are Joe Mitchell and Nick Tabarias on guitar, Buster Wylie on bass and featuring Ronald “Little Arthur” Anderson on harp and vocals.

Jazz and Blues Straight Ahead
The ground breaking jazz group Straight Ahead is a group of strong, inventive instrumentalists and vocalists, who have shown themselves to be powerful and imaginative composers and arrangers. Widely recognized for their eclectic and soulful approach to creating music, and their live performances are a dynamic celebration of power and joy with a wide range of musical textures, moods and tempos.
Straight Ahead has opened for the legendary Nina Simone at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland. The ensemble has shared the concert stage with a who’s who of the music world including: Kem, Jean Luc Ponty, Nancy Wilson, Roy Ayers, Tony Bennett, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Max Roach, the Yellowjackets and Dianne Reeves.

Beautifully Wrapped: An Exploration into the Global Art of Headwrapping!

Fold, place, whip around, tuck, pull, pin! Headwraps are a beautiful way to accessorize, protect your hair and show a bit of style. Participants learn to tie their own headwraps as well as the unique history of wrapping across the globe. Bring a piece of cloth or use one of ours and by the end of our time together, you will be able to create a piece of art!
Experience the colorful, spiritual and global practice of headwrapping, an art enjoyed by peoples of all backgrounds, ethnicities and continent.
Zarinah El-Amin Naeem, master wrapper, is an anthropologist and the founder of Beautifully Wrapped, an international interfaith corporation that uses the global art of headwrapping to build love and understanding. She is currently based in Detroit, Michigan and has been teaching headwrapping for over 15 years.

Family Story Time
Read for the Record
Join us Monday, October 20, at 7:00 pm in the Space Station Program Room for a fun, “foodie” story time.
The Southfield Public Library and the Friends of the Southfield Public Library are joining with Jumpstart to celebrate “Read for the Record” day by giving every family who attends our Family Story Time a copy of the book, Bunny Cakes, by bestselling author and illustrator Rosemary Wells.
Who: All Ages
When: Monday, October 20 at 7:00 pm

Teen Programs

Junior Library Board
Help the Library better serve you and your friends! We are looking for teens who live or go to school in Southfield or Lathrup Village and will jump in and help improve the Library by:
• Suggesting materials for the Young Adult collection
• Recommending program ideas you and your friends will enjoy
• Assisting with a variety of projects that positively impact the Library, its staff and the entire community
• Helping the Library make your visit the best possible

Wii Game On!
Take turns playing your favorite Wii games. Enjoy board and card games before and after your Wii fun!
Who: 6th – 12th graders

Hang Time
This is a time to work on group projects and other school work, play board games, try crafting or Wii gaming as well as enjoy visits from special guests.  Bring a snack and join us. You are sure to have a good time and accomplish a thing or two!

Donations in good condition are accepted year round. Please place books in the book chute by the Circulation Desk along with magazines not older than three months. Do not put audio visual materials down the chute; hand them to staff at the desk. Take large donations to the loading dock on the north side of the Library. Your donations keep our book sales successful!
