TV Shows that Need to Come Back – I came up with some TV shows that I would love to see grace my television once again. These shows haven’t seen the light of day in decades but I think may do well if brought back. One show on my comeback list is a pipe dream that could no longer exist in today’s world of reality TV. If Hollywood can re-hash movie ideas from the 80s, why can’t TV executives do it with more classic TV shows?

TV Shows That Need to Come Back #1 – Supermarket Sweep – Come on! Supermarket Sweep needs to come back! Not only do I think Supermarket Sweep should come back, I think it makes more sense now to air it than it did during its original run in the 1990s. Think about it… Depressed economy plus a chance to run roughshod through a supermarket for free groceries and cash! One of the best parts about Supermarket Sweep was its broad appeal. Like America’s Funniest Home Videos, it targets every demo. I haven’t lost my desire to see old women in generic sweatshirts barreling at deadly speeds through supermarkets and filling their carts with honey-baked hams, extra virgin olive oil and high-priced pain relievers. I don’t think the rest of America has either.
“Hey, the next time you’re at the checkout out counter and you hear the beep (beep beep) – Think of all the fun you can have on…” Crowd: “SUPERMARKET SWEEP!!”

TV Shows That Need to Come Back #2 – The Joy of Painting – Some would call an attempt to re-make The Joy of Painting sacrilege in the wake of the death of the legendary Bob Ross. While no one could fully replace Bob Ross as the host of The Joy of Painting, maybe they could find someone amiable enough to at least try. It couldn’t cost a heckuva lot to produce. What if someone brought back a show like The Joy of Painting on a less-than stodgy network to appeal to kids? Maybe Nickelodeon? I’m a huge fan of Bob Ross but I’d have to think that Bob Ross, from beyond the grave, would appreciate if a show like his was re-made to appeal to kids and families. It could never be the same but a show like The Joy of Painting could come back. Godspeed Bob Ross! Viva Van Dyke Brown oil paint!

TV Shows That Need to Come Back – #3 – Battle of the Network Stars – I’m reaching here. There’s no way this show could ever come back in the age of “Reality” television for many reasons.
- There are too many networks! No more ABC vs NBC vs CBS. The 3 channel days of pre-cable are over.
- Cost – Good Lord! Could you imagine if Ty Burrell wrecked his ankle on Battle of the Network Stars and shut down production of Modern Family? It’s one thing for Epstein from Welcome Back Kotter to risk life and limb in the obstacle course. It’s another for todays stars that make a million dollars per episode.
- Reality TV – I don’t think anyone would have any interest watching the fifth guy voted off of Survivor matching wits in a 10-speed bike race with Chumlee from Pawn Stars.
Reasons and evidence aside, I’d like to see Battle of the Network Stars come back in some format. It was huge in the 70s when Scott Baio and Kristy McNichol ruled the obstacle course and Howard Cosell brought high drama to the tug of war. Maybe it couldn’t hold a candle to the original but someone should try to bring Battle of the Network Stars back!
