How Far Would You Go to Shoot a Viral Video?

How Far Would You Go to Shoot a Viral Video? We’ve all seen the downfalls that can come from the glut of cell phone use and the utter misuse of social media. Cyberbullying, suicides, on-line heated exchanges, etc. But, to see how it can take a violent, life-threatening turn is beyond disturbing. When did tragedies turn into photo ops? The trend of obtaining a video (in hopes for it to go viral) at the expense of a life is incomprehensible.

How Far Would You Go to Shoot a Viral Video?

The trend of obtaining a video (in hopes for it to go viral) at the expense of a life is incomprehensible. Recent news reports have featured some unbelievable stories – an Ohio man who was arrested after he allegedly videotaped the aftermath of a deadly car crash instead of trying to help the victims; an Oregon teenaged boy who saves a woman in a burning car as others took video with their cell phones… I even heard one first-hand from my uncle who saw a group of teenagers at the side of the road with their cell phones in video mode pointed at a dog that unfortunately found itself on the freeway. Rather than save the dog’s life or summon help to get the dog off the road, they’d prefer to await a gruesome death and capture it on video. Lastly, and not nearly as reprehensible, I was T-boned on Rochester Road a few years back and I couldn’t believe the number of people that were literally hanging out of their drivers side windows to film the accident aftermath! Did these people think that my crumpled car was worthy of a Pulitzer? Did they think Local 4 was going to give them thousands of dollars for a 20 second clip of me and another woman trying to summon tow trucks? I was just a woman in a fender bender, not a Kardashian.

What goes through people’s minds when they choose to not react in an emergency situation and get video instead. Are they thinking they may somehow get famous if their video goes viral? Are they expecting top dollar for rights to their video? Are they seeking to break records for the number of views? Who cares! We’re talking about people’s lives.

How can somebody sit back and watch someone meet great bodily injury or even death without helping them? And, not only did they not help, they pretty much mocked the situation by disrespectfully taking video of it. There was no consideration for human life or dignity.

I just don’t get it. I’m shocked at how powerful the “lure” of cell phone misuse has become. Mankind used to have initial instincts that would compel us to jump into dangerous situations to save lives. Now, for some, the first instinct is to reach for their cell phone.
